A ribbon cable is a flat, thin cable composed of multiple small cables placed parallel to each other. Since each core is placed side by side, they form a wide and flat cable, similar to a ribbon, hence the name. This type of cable is mainly used in electronic systems that require multiple data buses to connect internal peripherals, such as disk drives to their respective drive controllers.
Ribbon cables are also called multiplanar cables.
