There are two types of RJ45 cables in daily use: standard patch cables and crossover cables. For example, a standard patch cable can be used to connect a computer to a network router/switch, or a cable modem to a router/switch. Crossover cables are usually used to directly connect two computers without using routers or switches. These cables look exactly the same; the only difference is in the termination of the cable's plug wiring. Unknowingly, when using crossover cables, standard patch cables may not cause damage to network components-the devices just won't form a connection.
