RJ45 cables are a popular choice for most network needs. However, fiber optic technology is a more expensive option, considering the faster speeds than RJ45 cables. Wireless technology also allows devices to be networked. However, wireless technology has two main shortcomings that make it unable to directly compete with RJ45 cables. First of all, data transmission through a wireless connection cannot be as fast as through an RJ45 cable. Second, wireless technology may expose data transmitted via radio waves to people who have devices that can "listen" to wireless data transmission; to use only RJ45 to access communications on the network, physical access to the network is required.
