USB 2.0 is a high-speed connection method that is 40 times faster than USB 1.1 (480Mbps instead of 12Mbps). It is plug-and-play and hot-swappable (no need to shut down your PC to insert or eject the device). It is faster than Firewire (IEEE1394/iLink), but not as quick as IEEE1394b (800Mbps). Standard A to B cables connect the computer to peripheral devices such as printers or scanners.

USB 2.0 cables can still work on USB 1.1 computers (they are backward compatible) and peripherals, but they can only work at high speed (480Mbps) when the computer and peripherals are both USB 2.0 . USB 2.0 peripherals will not work at high speed (480Mbps) unless they are connected with a USB 2.0 cable and connected to a computer equipped with a USB 2.0 port.
