A ribbon cable (also called a multi-conductor flat cable) is a cable that consists of many wires running parallel to each other on the same plane. Therefore the cable is wide and flat. Its name comes from its similarity with a ribbon.
50 pin flat ribbon cables are commonly used in computer internal peripherals such as hard drives, CD drives, and floppy disk drives. On some older computer systems, such as the BBC Micro and the Apple II series, they are also used for external connections. The ribbon-like shape interferes with the airflow inside the case, thus affecting the computer's heat dissipation. It also makes the cables difficult to handle, especially when there are many of them. As a result, round cables have almost completely replaced ribbon cables for external connections and are increasingly being used for internal connections.
